Hello There!

My name’s Chris Kent and I’m conducting some research for my Part-Time PhD in Digital Marketing at Manchester Metropolitan University.

My research focuses on whether small business owners can keep up with the rapid changes in modern marketing as a result of technology and the internet, and whether you can take advantage of what modern marketing has to offer to successfully promote your business.

I know how difficult it is to start, run, and succeed as a small business owner – in fact, my first tech business in the late 80’s failed because I didn’t really understand marketing. That was a painful experience!

My motivation is to help increase micro-business start-up success rates. I’m also hoping my research will go some way to convince the government to do more to help small business owners, just like you, with relevant and practical modern marketing training and support.

Let me explain why this is important:

  • Small businesses are the ‘life blood’ of the modern economy – in fact 99% of all business are SME’s and 97% of those are micro-businesses with less than 10 employees. Micro-business owners like you, really are the heroes of the modern economy, but…
  • Lack of marketing expertise, experience, and skills are a major contributor to the alarming small business failure rates – and that’s a real problem and one that needs to be addressed, because…
  • Most small business owners do all their marketing themselves, but have never been trained properly to perform the critical role of marketing manager in their business, and that’s a real problem because…
  • The modern marketing landscape is so complex – especially when you bring everything digital and social media have to offer into the mix - it’s almost impossible to know where to start!
  • And here’s the real killer – advances in technology and the internet are so rapid, there are just not enough skilled and qualified marketing staff to go around – which makes them expensive! It’s the good old law of supply and demand.

What I’m really interested in hearing about is what real day-to-day marketing challenges you face as a small business owner in the 21st Century – and what can be done to help you!

Why am I doing this now?

During my Master’s research a few years ago I conducted 25 face-to-face in depth interviews with entrepreneurs and small business owners and that gave me some fantastic insights. In fact, it was the inspiration for my book “21st Century Marketing: What it is, Why it matters, and How to do it” which I’ve written specifically to help small business owners get to grips with everything modern marketing has to offer.

Before I go to the next stage of my PhD research my Professor has suggested I validate what I’ve done so far with a short survey to get some ‘volume data’ to make sure nothing fundamental has changed – and that’s where you come in…

A Personal Note From The Author From The Forward Of His Book...

I started my first business over thirty years ago with a dream, great idea, a bank loan, and virtually no clue about marketing - and it cost me dearly! Fortunately, a wealth of practical experience guided my some pretty incredible teachers and mentors both in the commercial world and in academia have helped me rectify my early failings and shaped who I am today.

Many of the 5.3 million micro-business owners who, at the end of 2016, accounted for 96% of all UK private sector businesses also started their entrepreneurial lives with limited marketing knowledge but in a far more demanding and complex modern marketing landscape. They realise that the internet and digital technology is no longer an optional extra, but a key driver to growth, yet the global digital marketing skills shortage often means they have to fend for themselves.

The 25 entrepreneurs and micro-business owners I interviewed as I conducted the research for my Master’s Degree in Digital Marketing Communications frequently expressed shear frustration at the modern marketing challenges they face. Some told me:

“We found plenty of people who could build us a website but no-one could really tell us how to use it to properly market our business. We discovered there is so much more to digital marketing than just having a website and without even a basic understanding of the bigger picture it was extremely frustrating and we made some very expensive mistakes!”

“If there was only someone to guide me and tell me what to do and how to do it when I started out it would have been so much easier.”

“I am on a personal mission to teach at least 1 million entrepreneurs and micro-business owners how to apply the principles of modern marketing to build and grow their business in the 21st century.

My ultimate goal is to help increase start-up micro-business success rates - but here’s a hard fact to swallow: recent research revealed that 46% of start-up business failures can be directly attributed to lack of marketing skills.

Not lack of a good product.   Not lack of great and committed employees.   Not lack of opportunities, and even Not lack of finance.   But lack of customers - and that’s all down to lack of MARKETING!
